Lady Gaga chose to begin her Super Bowl halftime show by making a political statement—though not necessarily the one people were expecting. While it seemed certain that Gaga would send a clear anti-Trump message—after all, we are talk about the woman who posed with a sanitation truck outside one of his Towers immediately following the election—she opted for a much more subtle approach: one of unity.
Clad in head-to-toe Versace, the singer started atop the stadium while a sea of 300 drones (powered by Intel, naturally) lit up the Texas sky in the shape of an American flag as Gaga sang a rendition of “God Bless America” that quickly turned into “This Land Is Your Land.” The latter song, penned by Woody Guthrie, is widely considered to be a protest anthem, with its original lyrics even referencing a “big wall.” Then she jumped off the roof.
